Oral Pathology Biopsy Service Laboratory
In addition to seeing patients in clinic, our Board-certified oral and maxillofacial pathologists, Drs Adel Kauzman and Gisèle Mainville, offer microscopic diagnoses for tissue biopsies from the orofacial area. Histopathological analyses of tissue biopsies are done at the University of Montreal’s Faculty of Dentistry Oral Pathology laboratory.
Where do I send my biopsie?
Please send your tissue biopsy in a sealed 10% neutral buffered formalin container. It is very important to include pertinent clinical information as well as the patient’s information by completing the following Web form or the pdf form. If multiple biopsies are obtained for the same patient, place each specimen in a different formalin container, identified by the anatomic site.
For your convenience, we offer free biopsy submission kits. These contain formalin vials, labels, and pre-addressed envelopes.
Courrier Dentaire Express is available to pick up your biopsies and this at no cost to your clinic. The service is offered for the Greater Montreal area. In order to plan a pick up, please call 514 332-7000 and use client number 7473 for the invoicing. You can also use the courrierdentaire.ca (in French only).
If you are located outside the service territory of Courrier Dentaire Express, we strongly recommend the use of a courier service such as UPS, Purolator, or any other company to Send your biopsy to the following physical address:

Direct immunofluorescence (DIF) studies for certain immune-mediated conditions (such as mucous membrane pemphigoid) require additional tissue submission in a special solution (Michel’s solution). We are happy to provide Michel’s solution upon your request.
To request free biopsy submission kits or vials of Michel’s solution, please contact us. We will expedite it to your practice as soon as possible. Please allow a few days for delivery.
How do I submit a case for histopathologic review and consultation?
We would be happy to review any problematic case upon your request. We understand that it may be challenging for general pathologists to interpret oral biopsy samples. If your clinical impression is inconsistent with a microscopic diagnosis rendered at a local hospital, it may be beneficial to the patient to request our review of the slides. Either the patient or the surgeon who performed the biopsy can request a review of the slides by contacting the initial general pathology laboratory. The slides and/or tissue blocks can be sent to the address above.
